About Gainesville Farm Fresh

Melrose OrganicsOver decades we have watched the Green Revolution and Agribusiness carve out a huge carbon footprint, delivering products to our markets that are blemish free but tasteless.  According to most research, these products travel well over 1500 miles before they reach your table, with 80% of the total energy going toward transportation, packaging and storing. Agribusiness decides what varieties will be grown and in the end what we will eat. We do not have to support genetically altered food, grown from hybrid seeds offered by the food industry, but take advantage of the wonderful diversity of heirloom fruits and vegetables grown locally.  Our Gainesville area climate offers a wonderful opportunity to grow a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables, herbs and more. Along with our small farms we have several community garden projects, backyard gardens and edible landscapes that offer up a diversity of crops and produce.

Our greatest strength in countering this ongoing demise of our food system is in supporting our locally grown food sources.  The area farms, CSA's,  the markets, the restaurants and the organizations in our community that support sustainable food production such as Slow Food Gainesville, Hogtown Homegrown, Florida Organic Growers and Sustainable Alachua County are all a part of a community effort to support a sustainable food economy.  It's a nice feeling to be able to talk to and get to know the farmers that bring us the food we eat and feed our children.

Your participation in this site is key to it's success.  Encourage your local farmers, market managers and restauranteurs to sign up with Gainesville Farm Fresh and together we can promote and support sustainable agriculture.
